Rating & tiers

How your rating works, what tier you're in, and the Frienemi Board.

What rating system does Frienemi use?+

We use Glicko-2 โ€” the same family of system that powers chess.com, FIDE, and most modern competitive ladders. Three numbers track you: rating (your skill), RD (how confident we are about it), and volatility (how steady your form is). New players have high RD; after 5-10 matches it stabilises.

Why don't I see my raw rating number?+

Frienemi shows tiers (e.g., Silver / Gold / Platinum) instead of a raw 1500-style number. Reason: raw numbers create rating-grinding incentives and stress, and most players don't actually care what their Glicko-2 rating is โ€” they want to know "am I ahead of last week?". Tier movement does that.

How fast does my rating change?+

New players (high RD): your rating can swing 50+ points in a single match. After 10 matches RD stabilises and a single match moves you 10-25 points. We weight matches against opponents at your level the most โ€” beating someone way below you barely helps; beating someone above you bumps you noticeably.

What's the Frienemi Board?+

The Frienemi Board is the leaderboard inside the app. Three filters: Global (all players), Friends (just your friends list), Local (your radius). It only shows tier + W-L, not the raw rating. The top 5 in each scope get a highlight card.

Why does my Frienemi Board ranking sometimes drop even though I won?+

Rankings are relative. If someone above you also won (and beat a higher-rated player), they may have moved further than you. You're not actually playing worse โ€” the ladder is.
